Update on Shelby County Property Tax Appeals
The Shelby County Board of Equalization has started conducting property tax appeal hearings for tax year 2009.
In order to appeal their properties' assessments, taxpayers faced a filing deadline of July 31, 2009. The Board is scheduling only those appeals which were timely filed by that date.
Most of the hearings will initially be conducted before Hearing Officers appointed by the Full Board. Hearing Officers were selected based upon qualifications and experience whether in residential or commercial and industrial properties.
The Board has so far appointed 13 hearing officers and depending upon progress, may appoint more. The Board is hopeful that this process will screen many of the appeals which do not call for a special hearing before the full Board members.
The Board is placing priority on hearing single family home appeals first, but in the near future, the Board also plans to begin hearing directly before the full Board Members, all properties having an appraised value above $5 million.
The Board must hear more than 28,000 appeals which were filed for this year.
At this time, the Board is projecting that all appeals will be heard by the middle of May, 2010. However, in past years following a county wide reappraisal such as occurred in 2009, the Board has remained in session as long at 18 months.
The Board has eight total members at the present time and three of them are newly appointed members.
